poet and novelist, educated at Queens' College, Cambridge, was a founder‐member of the Group, and his first volume of poetry, The Collector and Other Poems (1960), was followed by many others, including Under the Reservoir (1992) and My Father's Trapdoors (1994). His poetry is marked by a richness of visual imagery, a sense of physical immediacy, and a deep preoccupation with religious and sexual mysteries. His novels, which include In the Country of the Skin (1973) and The Beekeepers (1980), are written in a highly poetic prose. He wote several works in collaboration with the poet and novelist Penelope Shuttle.
