A Chinese term used indiscriminately for the three non-Geluk schools of Tibetan Buddhism.on account of their ceremonial red caps, in contrast to those of the Gelukpas which are yellow. Neither term is used by the Tibetans who only apply ‘Red Hat’ to the leader and adherents of one branch of the Karma-kagyü school.
