Quick Reference

A novel by Sir W. Scott, published 1824.

The story is concerned with an apocryphal return of Prince Charles Edward to England some years after 1745, to try once more his fortunes, an attempt that meets with inglorious failure. Though not generally accounted one of the three or four greatest Waverley novels, Redgauntlet (written in the last years of Scott's prosperity) contains some of his finest writing, notably in ‘Wandering Willie's Tale’, a perfect example of the short story.

Subjects: Literature.
