A small family of oceanic fish that have a very elongate, ribbon-shaped body, the dorsal fin originating on the head and continuing towards the tiny tail fin. The first few dorsal fin rays are very long and form a crest or crown above the head. The pelvic fins are reduced to a single ray trailing below the body. Reputed to reach a length of about 7 m, Regalecus glesne (oarfish) has a world-wide distribution. There are two species.
