A design registered at the Designs Registry, which is part of the Intellectual Property Office (see patent). Registration gives monopoly rights over the outward appearance of an article, including its shape, configuration, pattern, or ornament, but not over the underlying idea. Works of sculpture, wall plaques, medals, and printed matter primarily of a literary or artistic character cannot be registered. It is also possible to register a Community Design Right, which is a registered design providing protection throughout the EU. See design right.
