Quick Reference

(RTP)

A route to qualified teacher status for non‐graduates working in school as unqualified teachers. It is aimed specifically as those with some experience of higher education who have not, however, completed a degree. The RTP allows them to extend their subject knowledge to degree level at the same time as obtaining their teaching qualification and continuing in paid employment. The Programme normally takes two years, and the in‐school training is carried out in partnership with a local higher education institution. Schools in special measures and pupil referral units are not eligible to take on RTP trainees. The Programme was discontinued in Wales from 2007.
