Established in 1998 as the successor to the Society of Professional Archaeologists, ROPA is the professional archaeological institute in America. Its aim is to establish, support, and maintain professional and ethical standards in all aspects of archaeological work. It offers a certification process whereby professional archaeologists, students, teachers, amateur archaeologists, and all those interested in archaeological education and research can become registered archaeologists. In doing so they agree to abide by a set of ethical codes and research standards. Registration allows the use of the distinction RPA.
