(b Vienna, 1898; d Zurich, 1980). Austrian-born musicologist and critic (Swiss cit. 1961). Ed. journal 23—eine Wiener Musikzeitschrift, 1932–7, in which he supported Second Viennese School. Settled in Switz. 1938, lecturing in Zurich and writing, from 1948, for Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Wrote books on Berg, Mozart, Haydn, Wolf, Wagner, Verdi, Bruckner, Mahler, and Schoenberg.
