(1798–1851), Presbyterian historian. Reid was appointed as the Synod of Ulster's first professor of ecclesiastical history in 1837. Four years later he moved to Glasgow University as professor of civil and ecclesiastical history. His magisterial History of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland (1867) was unfinished when he died suddenly, and the third volume was completed by W. D. Killen. It is an indispensable work, based on primary sources, many of which have since disappeared.
