Quick Reference

(b Rochester, NY, 19 Oct. 1948)

US dancer and choreographer. She trained in both Eastern and Western dance styles, studied with Cunningham and danced briefly with Twyla Tharp and Laura Dean. She also appeared in Robert Wilson's production of Philip Glass's opera, Einstein on the Beach (1976). She has since worked primarily as a solo improviser, her subtle movements playing with precise, often unexpected shifts of weight and tempo. Her style is hypnotic in flow, and wittily idiosyncratic in gesture. She has collaborated extensively with lighting designers, especially Jennifer Tipton, for example on the duet Necessary Weather (1993) which she created and performed with Sara Rudner. She has also worked closely with Baryshnikov, creating the solo Unspoken Territory for him in 1994 and performing the duet Meeting Place with him in 1996. Her recent works include Some Chamber Pieces (2001) and Sea Walk (2005).
