Quick Reference

The bearings of objects in relation to the ship's head. They can be expressed in two ways, as bearings on the port or starboard bow, beam, quarters, etc., with the words ‘fine’ or ‘broad’ to add further definition. These can be expressed more accurately in degrees from ahead on each side of the vessel, with the prefix ‘red’ if on the port side and ‘green’ if on the starboard. When relative bearings are given in this way, the word ‘degrees’ is omitted.
