A general term for methods of reducing emotional tension in medical procedures, work, sport, daily life, interpersonal relationships, etc. Many methods rely on a form of meditation, e.g., yoga or Zen. Some sports psychologists employ conditioning, using the power of suggestion to maximize the will to win and minimize apprehension. Least desirable and not very effective are methods that rely on use of mood-modifying substances.
