Under the Kyoto Protocol, a tradable certificate of proof of the amount of renewable energy that is used in the manufacture of a particular good or commodity. In many countries 1 REC = the equivalent of one megawatt hour (Mwh) of electricity from a renewable generation source. Also known as Renewable Energy Credit, and known in the UK as Renewable Obligations Certificate. See Renewable Portfolio Standard.
