A great and influential French Indologist, Renou held the chair in Sanskrit at the University of the Sorbonne, Paris, where he worked on a wide variety of topics, particularly in the field of Vedic studies. His many publications include: L'Inde classique: manuel des études indiennes (in 2 vols. with Jean Filliozat, Paris: 1949–53); an edition and translation into French of Pāṇini's Aṣṭādhyāyī (Paris: 1966), and Études védiques et paninéennes (2 vols., Paris: 1980, 1986).
