At its most inclusive, an English term used to designate anyone who has given up the householder (gṛhastha) life, and the values associated with it (encapsulated for the twice-born in the three ‘debts’), in order to pursue personal liberation. The term may be used synonymously with saṃnyāsin, i.e. someone who has formally taken renunciation (saṃnyāsa).
