A personality questionnaire designed to measure a respondent's characteristic mode of reacting to threatening stimuli or ideas, typical repressors tending to react by blocking, denial, and repression, that is, by putting threatening ideas out of their minds, and sensitizers tending to react by approaching, facilitating, and increasing vigilance, that is, by confronting the threatening stimuli directly. It was developed by the US psychologist Donn Byrne (born 1931), on the basis of items taken from the MMPI, and published in the Journal of Personality in 1961. R-S scale abbrev.
