Philadelphia-based hip-hop company. It was founded in 1992 by Harris (b N. Philadelphia, 1963) in order to develop hip-hop as a theatrical form, communicating narratives and ideas and moving beyond the dance form's original male, competitive image. In the Bessie Award-winning Rome and Jewels (2000) Harris updated Shakespeare's tragedy to a scenario of inner-city gang warfare; in Facing Mekka (mus. Darrin M Ross, 2003) women dancers were featured strongly in the cast, with Harris's choreography deconstructing the language of hip-hop and combining it with other dance influences. Recent works include Something to do with Love (2006). The company tours widely in the US and Europe and also organizes an extensive network of classes and workshops.
