Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi. Major Turkish political party 1923–80. Formally terminated in 1982 by decision of the National Security Council. Obedient to Kemal Atatürk's charismatic authority and modernization program. Held dictatorial single-party rule 1923–46 and continued in power under the multiparty system until 1950, when it lost free general elections and became an opposition party. Led several coalition governments in the 1960s and 1970s. Ideology was Ottoman patriotism and Islamism, rather than Turkish nationalism. Sought to preserve the offices of caliphate and sultanate, secure the integrity of the Ottoman motherland, and safeguard national independence. Rallied people through religion.
