A large group of inflammatory, environmental, neoplastic, and degenerative conditions affecting the respiratory system. They include acute, subacute, and chronic conditions that may affect any or all parts of the respiratory tract from the nasopharynx to the bronchioles and alveoli. Many can be prevented or treated. Chronic respiratory diseases, mainly emphysema and bronchitis, and pulmonary fibrosis, are among the leading causes of death.
