A condition in which a stimulus (1) activates more than one response in an organism, so that the responses vie with one another for dominance. For example, a person performing a difficult task in front of an audience may need to concentrate on the task but may also wish to concentrate on aspects of self-presentation and may therefore experience response competition, leading to an audience effect.
