(in the state pension scheme) The age at which an individual can start to receive a state retirement pension. The state retirement age for men in the UK is currently 65 and for women 60. However, from 2010 the government will gradually harmonize retirement ages at 65 for both men and women, in order to comply with EU law on equal pay.
