A town, coastal zone, island, or other geographical area to which many people move when they retire from employment, because of the temperate climate, tax regime, or good leisure facilities. As the elderly form an increasingly large share of the population in Western industrial societies, complete towns and housing developments are built for them in retirement centres—notably, for example, in the United States.
