The oxidized form of retinol (vitamin A) which has a variety of roles. It acts by binding to heterodimers of the retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and the retinoid X receptor (RXR), which regulate genes, including some homeobox genes, that have a retinoic acid response element (RARE). Retinoic acid is thought to be a morphogen in chick limb-bud development.
