Ballet in one act with choreography and design by Kylián and music by Janáček. Premiered 17 May 1975 by Stuttgart Ballet, Stuttgart. It originated as a pas de trois, created for the Stuttgart Ballet in 1974 soon after Cranko's death. The ‘Strange Land’ of the title is the place we come from and to which we return after death. Its expanded version featured a lyrical series of duets and trios displaying the inventive, sculptural plastique which became Kylián's hallmark. It remains one of Kylián's most popular works and has been revived for many companies including the Royal Ballet (1984) and Joffrey Ballet.
