A Reuben sandwich is an American sandwich made from corned beef, cheese, and sauerkraut, typically on rye bread. Of heroic proportions, it is usually a double-decker, and is standardly served hot. It was born in 1956, when it won a competition for new sandwich recipes. Its name comes from the personal name Reuben, but no one knows why.
