An independent prosecuting authority, established by the Commissioners for Revenue and Customs Act 2005, that is responsible for conducting criminal prosecutions (and related proceedings such as the restraint and confiscation of assets) in England and Wales where there has been an investigation by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs and for providing legal advice in relation to such investigations. It does so under the superintendence of the Attorney‐General and in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors. The RCPO coordinates its efforts with those of the Crown Prosecution Service and the Serious Organized Crime Agency.
