A cell assembly that continues to respond after the original stimulus that excited it has ceased, providing a neural basis for short-term memory, according to a hypothesis of the Canadian psychologist Donald O(lding) Hebb (1904–85). Also called a reverberatory circuit. See also phase sequence.
