A large and diverse family of proteins that regulate G-protein signalling. Originally identified as GTPase activating proteins (GAPs) for the Gα-subunits of heterotrimeric G-proteins but later shown to have a broader range of activities. A characteristic feature is a RGS domain, a conserved stretch of 120 aa that binds to activated Gα subunits.
