A monospecific family (Rhinophrynus dorsalis) comprising a toad in which the tongue is free at the front and is used to lick up ants and termites. There are no teeth, no external ears, and no free ribs. There is a horny digging ‘spade’ on the hind feet. The toads spawn after heavy rain. The tadpoles are filter feeders with oral barbels.
