The largest of the Dodecanese Islands in the SE Aegean, which in the late Bronze Age became a significant trading nation and dominant power; its capital, Rhodes, a port on the northernmost tip of the island, founded c.408 bc, was the site of the Colossus of Rhodes.

From 1309 to 1522 it was the headquarters of the order of the Knights Hospitallers.
