Quick Reference

(d. 818)

Eighth imam in the reckoning of the Twelver Shiis. The Abbasid caliph al-Mamun (d. 833) designated him as his successor to the caliphate in 816, provoking a revolt in Iraq. But al-Rida predeceased the caliph and was buried near Tus (now Mashhad), which, because of his tomb, has remained one of the most important shrine cities of the Shii world.
