lyric and religious poet and verse dramatist, born in Rugby and educated at King's College, London. Her volumes include Poems (1939), The Nine Bright Shiners (1943), The Golden Bird, (1951, which contains her poem on the theme of ‘Deus Absconditus’), and Some Time After (1972). Her poetic dramas include The Mask (1950) and The Trial of Thomas Cranmer (1956). Her Collected Poems (1994) shows the range of her devotional verse, ballads, and lyrics, and contains some of her later libretti or ‘Words for Music’.
