Quick Reference

A colorimetric scale for atmospheric opacity that measures emissions from furnaces, incinerators, etc. A Ringelmann number of 0 is clear air, 5 is totally opaque. The system was developed by the French engineer (1861–1931). It is a subjective measure although still used, despite that better techniques for measuring emissions are now widely available.
