Classical ornament associated with water. Motifs include personifications of rivers, vases pouring water, Neptune, tritons and mermaids, dolphins, fish, reeds and seaweed, frogs, etc. The term is named after Cesare Ripa (c. 1560–before 1625), author of Iconologia (1593 with later editions, notably 1603 and 1779–80), an immensely influential source-book of personifications, emblems, and decorative motifs.
