Quick Reference

An extension fitted to the leech of a fore-and-aft gaff-rigged mainsail to provide a greater area of sail to spread before a following wind. In the days of sail it was rectangular and was attached to the leech of the spanker and extended by a ringtail boom attached to the main boom. Later it became triangular, with the peak secured to the end of the gaff and the foot forming an extension of the mainsail.
