Early form of medieval castle originating in Germany in the 10th century ad and at first little more than a fortified manor. It was introduced to England immediately before the Norman conquest, and numerous examples were built in the later 11th and early 12th century. More elaborate examples comprise a ringwork and bailey, where the ringwork takes the place of the more usual motte and the bailey provides a military stronghold.
