Quick Reference

This Congregation was established by Sixtus V in 1588 to carry out the decrees of the Council of Trent on public worship. It was responsible for the direction of liturgy and everything to do with canonization, beatification, and the veneration of relics, as well as for all faculties, indulgences, and dispensations in liturgical matters. In 1969 it was divided into two Congregations, one for the Causes of Saints and the other for Divine Worship. In 1988 the latter was again combined (as it had been from 1975 to 1984) with the Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Subjects: Christianity.
