(b Wismar, 16 Sept. 1849; d Würzburg, 25 Jan. 1926). German viola player. He designed a larger version of the viola based on the acoustic properties of the violin, of which it was an exact enlargement. This viola alta attracted Wagner, who invited Ritter to lead the violas at his 1876 Bayreuth Festival. Ritter taught in Würzburg and adapted music for his instrument, but it became obsolete.
