(1901–71) was a most significant historian and educator in twentieth-century Australia. Born of humble migrant parents in Maldon, Victoria, and educated largely in Ernest Scott's history department at the University of Melbourne, he made his name as Sydney's second Challis Professor of History (1929–47) and was later its vice-chancellor (1947–67) in critical years of development.
