Quick Reference

His version of Gesta Romanorum (1577) was used by Shakespeare as a source for The Merchant of Venice. He was also a professional freelance scribe, producing MSS written in his serviceable, predominantly secretary hand, sometimes for solicited patrons. Some two dozen MSS can currently be identified, including the ‘Clifford’ MS of Sidney's Old Arcadia (in the Folger Library), some legal and historical tracts, and an autobiographical work, Eupolemia (BL Royal MS 18 A.LXVI).
