A NASA term describing a spacecraft computer that becomes disoriented and makes the wrong decisions. When Voyager 2 was launched, its main computer switched to back-up sensors in response to an emergency that did not exist, and later began to switch thrusters to cope with another non-existent emergency. Its executive program eventually reprogrammed the faulty sensors.
