Quick Reference

(Handel: Rodelinda). Sop. Wife of King Bertarido, mother of Flavio. When it is rumoured that her husband has been killed in battle, she is forced to accept the proposal of Grimoaldo, or her son will be killed. Bertarido overhears this, and cannot understand what is happening. Rodelinda asks Grimoaldo to kill Flavio in front of her, for, she declares, she cannot be the wife of a usurper of her husband's crown and, at the same time, be mother of the rightful heir. Grimoaldo is unable to bring himself to do this. Bertarido escapes and is reunited with his wife and son. Created (1725) by Francesca Cuzzoni.
