Spanish composer, who is known best for his guitar concerto.

Blind from the age of three, Rodrigo soon developed musical skills. After local tuition he went to Paris to study composition under Dukas at the École Normale de Musique (1927–32). The success of his Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra (1939) led to similar compositions in concerto style. In 1944 he was appointed music adviser to Spanish Radio and in 1946 became professor of music history at Madrid University. His Concierto Pastorale (1978) for flute and orchestra was commissioned by the flautist James Galway (1939– ). Rodrigo married the Turkish pianist Victoria Kamki in 1933.
