Quick Reference

A particular cadence beaten on the drum when a man of bad character was dismissed the naval service in Britain for an offence committed on board ship. It was also used when a man was sentenced to be flogged around the fleet with a cat-o'-nine-tails. It appears to have been introduced into the British Navy during the latter half of the 18th century and was in use for almost a century.
