The dynamic process of imaginatively adopting the perspective of others in interaction in order to adjust one's own role behaviour to this (role making). In contrast to the conception of roles within functionalism, in symbolic interactionism, interaction can modify or create roles. For Mead, role taking is central in the development of the self.
