Eng. tenor. Took up singing 1967 after being farmer. Début 1973 with EOG in Iolanta. Ch. and small roles, Glyndebourne 1972–6. Won John Christie Award. Débuts: ENO 1978; WNO 1979; CG 1988; Salzburg Fest. 1987. Sang Aschenbach (Death in Venice) for Scottish Opera, 1983 and Peter Grimes 1994. Also sings Lieder, Dream of Gerontius, Bach Passions, etc. Dir. of Singing Studies, Britten‐Pears Sch., Snape, from 1990. CBE 1992.
