Roman Psalter

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The text of the Psalms used in Italian churches until the time of Pius V (1566–72), when it was virtually replaced, except at St Peter's, Rome, by the ‘Gallican Psalter’ (q.v.). Earlier scholars equated it with the revision of the Latin Psalter which St Jerome says that he made hastily on the basis of the LXX, but few now think that the Roman Psalter was produced by Jerome. See also Psalter.
