John Rooke was born at Aikton Head, Cumberland on 29 August 1780. He died on 26 April 1856, and was buried in Wigton cemetery. He was the eldest son of John Rooke, a yeoman and surveyor, and his wife Peggy. Rooke attended the local village school and then Aikton school. Other than that, he was entirely self-taught. He was a farmer until he was thirty years old.
