(1770–1850) ship captain and privateer. The Massachusetts-born Ropes went to sea at a young age and at twenty-four commanded his own ship. Back home, he entered politics and also became a privateer, operating out of Salem. He captured several English brigs during the War of 1812 and was hailed a hero in Massachusetts.
