Quick Reference

A narrow line of cumuliform clouds that forms along a shallow cold front, and is normally particularly well developed over the sea. Such a cloud line may arise when a front weakens, its slope decreases, and there is a cold air outflow at the surface, creating increased convection ahead of the front. There is often a clear band behind the rope cloud, where air is subsiding between it and the residual cloud along the original cold front.
